Choosing the right glasses for your face shape

Sunglasses are protective eyewears that shield the eyes from direct sunlight. They're also fashion items that make you look super cool.

When making a choice regarding sunglasses to purchase, there are tips to choosing the best pair that will give you a perfect style.

1. Facial shapes or features:

This can be determined by examining the jawline, length, and width of your face. The widest part of your face is the forehead, cheeks, and jaws. The length of the face runs from your temple to your chin, it can either be short or long.

The most popular categories of face shapes are:

Round shape:

They have almost equal length and width, a small chin, and no well-defined curves.

The best styles for this face type are pointed, rectangular, square, cat eyes, butterfly, and aviators frames. And yes, dark shades to balance the face and bring it narrower to length.

Avoid narrow frames, glasses with sharply defined edges, and geometrically shaped specs.

Square shape:

Here, the length and width of the face are about the same length, with sharp angles at the jaws.

The best styles for this face type are oval or round-shaped frames, glasses with colorful frames, frame-less glasses, cat eyes, or aviators.

Avoid square frames with sharp corners, narrow and petite frames, and frames wider than your face.

Oval shape:

Oval faces have gentle narrowing at the forehead with slightly wider cheekbones giving it even features. The face length is greater than the width.

This face shape looks good in every frame. However, it is recommended that you choose sunglasses that cover the face from the eyebrows to the cheekbones.

The best styles for this face type are wide spec in line with the eyeballs, butterfly glasses, aviator, and cat eyeglasses.

Avoid narrow, sharply defined edges, or massive frames

Triangular shape:

This face shape is slightly longer than its width. The chin is wide and square, with a jawline broad and wider than the forehead.

The best styles for this face are aviators, frameless glasses, cat eye glasses with transparent lenses, frameless glasses, and round glasses with bright decorations.

Avoid glasses with square or rectangular frames, glasses with narrow or small frames, and glasses with sharp outlines.

Diamond shape:

This face type has wide cheekbones and a narrow forehead, a pointy chin, and a narrow thin face without angle. The width of your forehead is smaller than that of your cheekbones. Also, the cheekbone measurement is the widest and most prominent part of your face.

To soften the look, angular frames like rectangular or oval-shaped cat-eye frames, oval designs with strong brow lines.

Rectangular shape:

This is a combination of the oval and square-shaped face. The cheek, jaw, and forehead are all of equal width; with the face longer than its width.

The best styles for this face are large-framed glasses, aviators, and round-framed glasses.

Avoid glasses with narrow, small, or bright colours.

2. Comfortability:

How well your sunglasses fits on your face is very important. Your ear and nose should be supporting your sunglasses to sit right on your face, not your cheeks. Make sure to get the perfect sunglasses for you. Avoid something too tight or uncomfortable so that you don't develop head, eye, ear, or cheek pains.

3. Lens materials:

When shopping for your next pair of sunglasses, consider the materials used in making them.  A good scratch-resistance layer and quality lightweight lens are important features to look out for.

4. UV-protection:

Make sure to confirm that the sunglasses can block at least 95 % UVA and UVB before buying them. When you do this, you're protecting yourself from cataracts, cancer, sunburns, and some other UV-induced complications.

Cheers!
