How to get the perfect bra size
According to research, 80 percent of women wear the wrong bra size without even knowing it. Are you one of them? Possibly.
How then do I know you’ve been wearing the wrong bra?
The band is either too tight or loose:
- Fit a finger between the band and your body, if you can’t, it means it's too tight.
According to a study conducted at the University of Brasilia, a bra that’s too tight can increase the risk of developing breast cancer.
It is way too small or big:
- A bra that is too big won’t give your breast the necessary support. It can cause backache, neck ache, and other health issues. Why then do you wear it?
- On the other hand, too small bras can cause breakouts, rashes, and even cancer. Your bra should fit right.
All of these can only be avoided by taking measurements and knowing your bra size.
To get started, you need a measuring tape and a mirror.
We’ll need to do some basic calculations here to measure our band size and bust size. Not to worry, it’s not serious mathematics.
Below are the steps to follow:
- Wear a non-padded or lightly lined bra so that you can get an exact measurement of your breast.
- To start with, put the measuring tape around your underbust (your underbust is around your chest, just below your underarms, or just place it around your bra band) to get your band size. Round up to an even number if you get an odd number. This means if you get 37 inches, round it off to 38 inches.
Underbust = band size
- Measure the fullest part of your bustline (at nipple level) to get your bust measurement. Make sure it’s not too tight. Round it up to the nearest whole number, if you get a half-inch. That is, if you get 33.5 inches, make it 34 inches.
If you have a breast bigger than the other, just use the measurement of the larger one and tighten the strap of the other one to have a better fit.
- Your cup size is the difference between your bust measurement and your band size.
Let’s take my measurement as an example.
Bust measurement: 37 inches
Band size: 32 inches
Cup size = Bust measurement – band size
Cup size equals 5 because that’s the difference between my bust measurement and band size.
- Looking for a simpler way to do the calculation? Just input your bust measurement and band size in the Bra size calculator
- Your bra size is your band size with your cup size.
Now, check the chart below to know what your cup size is. If the difference between your bust measurement and band size is 5.
Cup | Inches | Cup | Inches |
A | 1 | E or DD | 5 |
B | 2 | F or DDD | 6 |
C | 3 | G | 7 |
D | 4 | H | 8 |
Using the bra size chart, you can tell that my bra size is 32DD.
Easy peezy.
